THE HARPER INDEX - Masters of Economics
Masters of Economics? Do the Conservative's cranky core supporters
share their leaders' aversion to facts? How else can one explain their
belief that the Harper group are Canada's best economic managers?

Conservatives Suck at Economics
How can ANYONE believe Steve Harper and his posse of finger puppets
know ANYTHING about managing an economy?
Remember this lie?
"We will not run a deficit."
- Finance Minister Jim Flaherty
Oct. 9, 2008
Seven years later, we're still waiting for their first honestly balanced budget.
Here's a 2014 comic by MacKinnon at the Herald. Says it all, really...

Here's a graph comparing Harper to other Canadian Prime Ministers. Woo-ee.

Harperian economics
Steve believes. He believes 100% that the private sector and "the market"
will make our lives better, better, best!
In the olden days, this economic system was known as "capitalism".

Like so many other things in our lives, this economic system
has been "re-branded". It's now known as "free enterprise".

financial bailouts here and abroad in recent years, might wonder about
the "free" thing. But you're not Steve.
Steve has a Masters Degree in economics. He knows how all this works!

Canadians whose jobs disappeared since Steve took the wheel often
have pretty bad attitudes about our country's economic progress.
But you can't listen to their griping....hardly any of them have economics degrees.
This means they don't even understand what "income splitting" means,
let alone what a great job Steve is doing. For rich people.
OK, OK... it's actually a really lousy job, but watch his TV ads and you'll
see that he's doing his best.

$ 1 Billion Pork-a-Palooza
It's probably a coincidence, but...
a few days before Our Leader dropped the writ on the longest election campaign in living memory, His government slipped over a BILLION bucks into ridings across Canada.
It's probably just another coincidence that $839 million of that landed in Conservative ridings (... keeping the election love flowing...!).
Here are the grisly details from Sun Media's Parliamentary Bureau Chief. *

* Yes, they do have a terrible Liberal bias, but hey, numbers are numbers.
Joe Oliver's Fantasy Economics
When the Conservatives first won power, they inherited a country in great financial shape.
The Liberals had been generating surpluses for nine years, and the country
had an operating surplus of nearly $14 billion.
Cut to Great Economic He-Man Harper and his Majority Rulers.
They spent it all, and then some....
After two years, they were running a deficit of $5.8 billion.
Add that to the Liberal's surplus, and they managed to blow $24 BILLION!
Since then, they have been in deficit each and every year.
Under Harper federal debt has increased by over $150 billion,
If you like this kind of thing, you can read all the gory financial details here...
No matter how you add it up, Harper’s fiscal record is a catastrophe
Conservatives LOVE Our Vets!
Actually, They Don't

Bruce Moncur has finally won his fight with Veterans Affairs to get the pension he deserves after suffering debilitating injuries in the service of his country.
The bad news is that it took nine years for the Afghanistan veteran to make the government do the right thing, and he had to battle the politicians and bureaucrats when he was at his most vulnerable, both physically and emotionally.
If Moncur hadn’t gone public about his struggles, he might never have been granted his pension, despite taking shrapnel to the head, lower back and buttocks. Moncur endured several surgeries, rehabilitation sessions and lost five per cent of his brain in Kandahar City.

The government’s calculated cash value of a man who was 22 years old and had the potential to live a long and full life before being hit by friendly fire in September 2006? A lump-sum payment of $22,000.
“I fought like a dog for nine years,” Moncur said. “More than any soldier should ever have to.”
